Outdoor Kitchen & Paver Patio Case Study: Just Outside of Lancaster, PA

MARY DRESSER, RLA ALSA • July 27, 2017

At Earth Turf & Wood our goal is always focused on creating one-of-a-kind outdoor living spaces for our clients that truly suit their wants and needs. In this particular outdoor kitchen and patio design project in Lititz (just outside of Lancaster, PA), the homeowners wanted an open design concept.

They previously had a screened in porch but decided to open everything up. The end result was an outdoor kitchen and patio that was perfect for entertaining with multiple spaces for lounging and dining.

Among the requests for this project was an open concept outdoor kitchen in which the chef could be cooking while still chatting with family or guests seated at the attached island. A built-in umbrella ensures that despite the open design concept, those seated don’t have to be baking in the sun.

This particular kitchen is a concrete modular design which allowed the homeowners to save some money on the outdoor kitchen cost and have enough funds in the budget to incorporate other hardscaped areas. Like all of our outdoor kitchens in Lancaster, PA and nearby areas, this design features a granite countertop. Granite is the material-of-choice for outdoor kitchens given its durability.

The outdoor kitchen also features an upgraded, larger grill, double door storage underneath, and a pull-out trash can that is built into the countertop.

A Large-And-In-Charge Patio Design

As the “base” of a project, a patio is absolutely vital in any outdoor living space’s design. Whether you add a kitchen, a fire feature, or even a pavilion, the patio is the hardscaped space upon which everything else will be built.

This particular paver patio was large enough to incorporate not only the kitchen but a separate dining area and seating area. There was also an additional patio area set into the house, which was a space that was previously screened in. Though there are multiple areas, you can see that they flow together nicely so that even when entertaining large numbers of people, everyone is ultimately together.

In addition to the patio, this project also features outdoor lighting, retaining walls, and a unique fire pit based on a contemporary design. Though fire pits are traditionally thought of as being circular—such as a campfire that people sit around—this is a great example of how a fire pit can be custom built to suit any style preference. This rectangular fire pit creates a cozy atmosphere for the seating area by providing some ambiance and light.

All of the material in this project came from EP Henry. Thoughtful attention was given to the flow of the materials considering the space is so large. A decorative border in a different color from the rest of the patio provides a subtle accent.

Another way to know that you’re really being heard is to pay attention to whether the RLA takes notes about what you’re saying. We believe in meticulous note taking—writing down all of those “little details” that really make a difference in the finished product.

At Earth Turf & Wood, we’ll recite back to you what we hear you saying to ensure that we get it correct. It’s important to us that we hear what you’re saying and that we get the design the way you want it. Listening is something that we get a lot of compliments on. When the patio design project is complete, our clients tell us “you really listened to what I wanted.” Bringing your dreams to life is something that we take pride in and we love seeing our clients’ reactions when they see the final result.

Even with a large property, it can sometimes be challenging to design an outdoor space that everybody in the family loves and can utilize to the fullest. That was certainly the case for this landscape design near Harrisburg, PA, for a family with four active boys.

We’ve been fortunate to have been provided countless opportunities to work with clients on a wide variety of projects over the years. One of the most common areas of focus is backyard living spaces. A great way to get the most out of a backyard is often accomplished by adding (or renovating) both a patio and a deck. Patio and deck combinations are a great way to fully maximize the use of your living area, not only horizontally, but vertically, too. An upper-level deck that leads down to a lower level patio will absolutely give you lots of fantastic outdoor living space to use and enjoy to the fullest.

The natural setting of this backyard, which backs up to surrounding woods, was one of the aspects that the homeowner of this property loved most. It was a peaceful and perfect environment for the avid gardener and for someone who truly loved being engulfed in nature. However, the functionality of the property was something that was desired to be improved upon. Since the homeowner enjoyed entertaining and spending a lot of time outdoors, a solution to remedy the condition of the sloped backyard was needed so the space could be utilized to its full potential.
