6 Critical Things to Consider When Building a Pool
Over the years, we have completed a variety of pool patio installations for a multitude of customers and understand all of the things to consider when building a pool. We realize the pool company has one goal: to sell the pool with a concrete patio. So, the pool is installed, and the customer is ultimately disappointed because the area surrounding the pool is drab and boring, not at all what they originally envisioned.
Often, the customer has no idea of the options available to them beyond what is presented by the pool company. They are often left out of the loop as to what it may really cost to build that perfect multi-tiered paver patio setting that will create a beautiful private paradise.
Remember, you have one shot at this; once the pool is completed, there’s no moving it at a later time.
Below, we've listed key questions asked by previous pool customers that will help you get what you really want:
1. Can you recommend a first-class pool installation company? The choices are confusing, and we want to make sure we deal with a reputable company.
We would be glad to give you our recommendation after a review of your needs. Over the years, we have become acquainted with some very good (and very poor) pool installation companies. As a landscape contractor, we have gotten a first-hand view of all of the pool contractors out there.
In making a recommendation, we are placing our hard-earned reputation on the line. Although price is obviously a consideration, the cheapest pool contractor is almost never the right answer.
Our end goal is to match you with the best choice for your pool and oversee the total project so that three years down the road, you aren’t having major issues. Remember that the time to plan, make wise choices, and address problems is BEFORE your pool is in the ground.
2. Would you be willing to general contract the entire project in the backyard if it involves structures, irrigation, a kitchen, etc?
We have that capability and have done it on several complex projects. These projects require a tremendous amount of foresight to make sure things run smoothly, on time and are done correctly.
We have all the necessary resources to make sure this happens so that you are completely satisfied in the end. Throughout the project, we will make sure that every partner company that we hire upholds the same quality and professionalism that we instill here at Earth, Turf, & Wood.
3. How much should we plan on allocating to transform the pool company’s proposal into our own outdoor paradise?
Every pool project is different, but one of the biggest surprises behind pool installations is what it really costs to finish your project the way you want it to be done. History has proven that removing the concrete slab allowance from the pool contract and supplementing it with a paver patio, landscaping, water features, lighting, outdoor grilling area, and speakers can often double the price of the pool installation.
Be careful that you take the time to plan out an accurate budget covering BOTH pool installation and environment creation before beginning, or you may find costs skyrocketing well beyond what you had planned or expected.
Pool companies never allocate funds for landscaping, re-seeding, lighting, or any paver work. If there are funds allocated for retaining walls, it is usually a minimum amount and well under the true construction costs. Don’t get caught with painful budget surprises. Plan ahead!
4. In light of that, how can we begin to plan an accurate budget of what we really want for our swimming pool area?
If you’ve asked this question, you’re already well on your way to saving yourself a lot of stress, anxiety, and dollars.
Having our Registered Landscape Architect (RLA) draw a scaled landscape plan as soon as you’ve decided on your pool style is the key to creating both an accurate budget and a pool area that you’ll be thrilled with.
The RLA can place the pool in the backyard to allow sufficient area for dining, playing, and swimming. In addition, the pool companies can utilize this plan to pinpoint the exact location of the pool.
5. How does getting Earth, Turf, & Wood involved early save us money on our pool?
One major issue that we often face when we are brought after the pool is in the ground is dealing with a lack of easy access to complete the installation of the hardscape and landscaping surrounding the installed pool. This difficulty can easily increase costs.
To save costs, often we’ll work hand in hand with the pool company to utilize each other's resources for stone, topsoil, etc., and save you money on the total project.
How much of a savings can be realized? If we are brought in at the right time, it is not uncommon to save the homeowner in excess of $5,000 on the whole project.
6. When do we need to start planning to have the pool open for Memorial Day?
For a Memorial Day opening, you need to start planning in the fall! Like most pool companies, our spring season is very busy. Most pools that are opened by Memorial Day have contracts signed with both us and the pool companies by January 1st of that year. Preplanning is the key to a surprise-free, smooth project on any pool installation!
